Anyone know what is happening in Debian Lenny?

I'm running gnome under lenny/sid right now with no problems, though I
must admit I did my tasksel for gnome a while ago. Spawning up of
consoles is controlled in /etc/inittab, I would start by looking there
first. I'd say you're being dropped into single user, runlevel 1, but
that's not the case if you have gdm coming up, as far as I know.
