speechd-up splitting text strings

Oh and another issue, not sure if its related or not...
if output is one character, it doesn't get spoken.

type echo hi
speech is
hi
prompt

type echo h

speech is
prompt


inserting whitespace before the single character or after it doesn't
make a difference. one speakable character = no speach. again only
with auto speaking new text, numpad 7 to go up reads it just fine.
