intermittently unable to shut up speakout

Hi.  I am using the git as of October 26 which is supposed to be the
latest and at times, I cannot shut up the speakout synth.  I use emacs
a lot and after pressing e during a vm session (which is edit the
message), it will go on for quite a bit before I can finally shut it
up -- maybe 20 or 30 seconds where hitting the enter key on the keypad
does nothing.  I am using kernel linux-2.6.27-gentoo-r4 and I have
speakup and the spkout module built in.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
