Wondering about possibly installing the new Debian 4.0 Speakup modified

I attempted installing Debian 4 once, but the installer seemed bent on me using their own partitioning utility, which I couldn't  figure out very easally. I usually use cfdisk or fdisk. Could someone walk me through the Debian install? Would it work with my Dell Latitude D600 laptop? Would Alsa work, etc? I have a ltlk external synth.
