speakup-debian amd disk

I tried installing debian on an amd-64 athelon using the x86 version of 
the software.  The installation failed because several ide-related disk 
modules were missing and it failed trying to install grub onto the system. 
If I try an amd-speakup-debian iso, am I likely to run into the same 
situation? Also tried this with slackware 11.0 and couldn't get onto the 
internet since my 3c59x driver can't find or hasn't got a checksum so it 
shuts down the internet connection.
