Speakup Ignoring Text?

Trying to think of a good subject-line for this one?  I just once again 
installed ocrad.  While looking at the README file, it suggested I examine the 
INSTALL file.  So, with type aliased to less in tcsh, I
type INSTALL
while in the ocrad version directory.
I hear no speech from my Dec-Talk U S B.
I look at my current line--and 1 screen has scrolled by in silence.  Sure I can 
review line-by-line, but why is speakup not reading from this command--and is 
that something I can fix?
