Could an Ubuntu kernel possibly be compatible with Etch?  It has Speakup
compiled as modules.  Just a thought, and it might actually work.
Otherwise, you can check
http://people.debian.org/~shane

to see if the latest Etch kernel has been uploaded there and patched
with Speakup.
