Speed of USB 2.0

I have another question concerning USB mass storage devices under linux.
I have my Sandisk E140 player that is said to be a USB 2.0 compatible
device. Data seems to transfer very quickly under windows but it seems
that under Linux, the 'cp' command takes a very long time to complete a
single file. It would seem as if it is transferring at USB 1.1 speeds
instead of the faster 2.0 speeds. The dmesg output indicates that a
"New USE high speed" device is detected. Where I believe a 1.1 device
would show up as a "New USB device".

Do I need to look at any other options to improve this performance?
Keep in mind this device is quite fast under windows so I'm sure it is
really USB 2.0.

Thanks for any help.
