Hi Garrett. You will find that a lot of SATA controlers have some sort of built-in RAID functionality; I myself had to dig around quite a bit before finding one that didn't have RAID0
capability for example. In terms of which software RAIDing so-to-speak program to use, afaik mdadm supersedes mkraid. As for why not to choose hardware RAID, its possible that whatever method
one uses to configure the controler isn't accessible, or configuration may only be able to be done on the basis of entire disks instead of partitions. Software RAID just seems more flexible in
that regard. In terms of RAID levels, check out the Software-RAID-Howto. That gives good explanations on the various levels available. Unfortunately, if you don't have the cash for 4 disks of
pretty equal size, then you are stuck with RAID0. Hth.

Are there any good dedicated, completely hardware SATA RAID controllers? Should I go for a "fakeraid" controller instead of the Promise TX4, or should I use mdadm? And what level would be best for a general purpose system performing some server tasks but mostly serving as my main desktop? 0 seems logical since it concatenates the disks together, but I'm not sure I like the consequences for disk failure (though they wouldn't really be any better for a single IDE disk). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
