help with kernel?

Don't you ever read any messages from the kernel? try dmesg or
/var/log/messages.  The kernel messages should show any devices found
while booting.  If your network code is moduler, then you will have to
run the network startup scripts by hand to see what messages get
generated.  Another thing to try is recompile the kernel with the
network related options statically compiled then the startup messages
should surely reveal info about your network hardware.  If the network
stuff is removable, then you'll have to stick with module loading and
the network startup scripts.  I had to do similar things with sound card
support in my laptop recently because I had a hell of a time figuring
out what kind of soundcard I had.  I finally Googled around with the
name and model of my Toshiba laptop to finally identify the chipset and
then I proceeded from there.  It took me nearly a whole week to get that
part figured out.
