help with kernel?

Hello list,
I haev a problem,
I got someone to compile the kernel for me. I installed the .deb package, and it modified grub, I can boot to it, but I always see that its going into single user mode...
Any idea why its doing this?
I need to get it going, so I can install espeak... My hardware synthasizer broke, and I can't use doubletalk...
