how to boot with speakup off by default

Well, you have 2 options. You can put speakup_synth=none on your
append line, which will not load a synth driver by default, or if you
have the latest cvs of speakup, you can put speakup_quiet=1 on your
append line, which will have the same effect as if you hit
numpad-enter when speakup first started talking. Hth.
