perms in /var/spool/mail

Hi. Wondering what people think of this. I installed the Washington 
University imapd and ipop3d server daemons and in the log I see that the 
permissions on /var/spool/mail need to be 1777 for best performance. 
Right now it's set at 771 I believe. Using Fedora Core 3.
