burning CD's

It sounds like you are trying to burn audio CD tracks on a CDRW disk.
Unfortunately, older CD players won't play CDRW disks.  If you have a newer CD
player, try playing the CD in that.  Also, you could try

cdrecord -atip

If it says "is erasible" it might not play in all CD players.
