You shouldn't need to do anything. On my slackware system, the
hardware detection software, the name for which I forget, detects
everything, and loads all the modules you need automatically. From my
limited playing with sarge on a physical box, debian should be doing
the same thing. Did you try running alsamixer to unmute the volume
controls, and playing some sound?
