image format conversion utilities

Thanks much, guys.

It worked fine. That imagemagick package is a lot of tool for a minimum 
job, but it works. 

Slackware used to ship with a program called "seejpeg" but I don't see 
anything like that in the Debian world. Lots of other small converters 
out there though.

I understand about lossy compression of images, and will not do these 
conversions any more often than absolutely necessary.
