I know one way to prevent startx from working turn off xfs in the system services if using fc3. That's what prevented startx from working for me until I turned that back on again. If you hear error 104, then turn on xfs and that error will go away. If you're not surewhat's going on, startx 2>&1 >startx.log should get you startx output redirected to startx.log.
