swap file

hi all,
i have noticed that on my computer
that when i started using kernel 2.6.11.9
that i am getting segmentation fault errors
because when i start building the kernel
it does not appear to use my swap file
i do a free and the system shows
to have a swap file
but the compiler gives me errors.
when i used 2.4 kernels i did not get these errors
also i could tell that
the compiler was using my swap file
any ideas??
