As a rule of thumb, I have found it smarter to create a new stanza for
any new kernel, rather than mauling the existing entry. You can
perfectly well have multiple kernels to choose among in grub. Don't
throw out what's working until you know the new stuff is good, in other
words.

PS: And you needed a custom compile because??? You didn't say.
