compiling a kernel with debian.

Hey, I hope this gets to the list, i have put debian on my mainbox and 
have a problem, know sound, i'm using the debian iso from 
http://people.debian.org/shane, its a 2.4 kernel, and my sound modules or 
drivers or what ever they are are in the 2.6 kernel,  I have the 2.6 
kernel-source 
i just need 
to 
know how to compile it and get it going with speakup  or if someone has a 
patch for this that would help to.
