ok now mplayer wants to work

Scott,
Beware of the mplayer 'mute' command, the 'm' key. It sets the sound
card PCM volume to zero and leaves it there until you unmute it again.
Unfortunately if you exit mplayer while it is muted, you have no sound,
and resuming mplayer again is of no help. Evidently getting back into
mplayer starts off with audio unmuted, but PCM is still 0, which is very
confusing to say the least. So while mplayer is working, keep your paws
off the keyboard! <smile>
