dvd playback works

That's a bug. Certainly when installing by hand you'd come across
installing that lib. Where did you get your mplayer? Mine came via yum
from the Dag repository, which would certainly make this a bug.

Just log into X, and do export DISPLAY=:0 before launching mplayer in a
console.
