mplayer made me a lier

Ok folks so either I'm complete mad or this damned mplayer is making me 
hear things.
I swear the damned thing played for a few minutes, but now I get them 
same error message I was getting before. Now why would it work once and 
not again and continuing to complain about not being able to open the 
dvd device.
Doesn't matter what I specify on the commandline or if I'm root or not.
This really is driving me completely mad.
