Ot, getting win xp working with a samba printer

Yes, the printer does show up under my network places. However, adding
the printer that way results in the problem which I described in my
first post on this thread, and which I am trying to resolve now. 

No, I am using lprng, which is what older versions of slackware came
with, and which I didn't bother changing because it works just fine
for me.
