My best success has been hosting my own site. You have access to the best stuff
the web hosting industry has to offer right on your own PC. And most ISP's don't
charge you by the gigabyte of data transfer like all web hosting services I am
aware of do.

Get setup with something like dyndns.org and use Apache or whatever you like,
although I personally recommend Apache as a web server. Then you just setup your
site the way you want it right from your own machine.

If you can't or simply don't want to leave your computer on all the time,
however, I'm not sure where to point you. There are plenty of free services
available, but they either clutter your web site with ads or limit your data
transfer to a few megabytes per month after which they cut you off until the next
month, or they do both of these, making their services unusable for the most
part. If I am wrong, (and I would really like to be), please correct me.
