Software Synths

I am a relative newbie to linux, and want to ge
speakup working on my system, but don't have the money
for a hardware synthfor very occasional use. I keep
seeing references to being able to use software synths
with speak, but I can't find howtos on how to get them
working. If anyone could help me on this i would
greatly appreciate it.
