Hello all:
Actually, mplayer can control the pcm volume for your computer directly 
from its interface.  The "/" key lowers the volume and the "*" raises 
the volume.  I am not sure if it has mute.  This volume is the same as 
the pcm volume in your mixer application.  I use it all the time.
Actually, I just tested it and it does have mute also.  The key for mute 
is "m".  You can press "m" once to mute the sound and press it again to 
unmute it.  So, you can do both, use the volume control or use mplayer's 
interface.
