Hi Steve.  If you have the bash-docs package installed, then you can
type:

info bash

It is an extreemly well done info page, nicely devided into various
sections, including a variables section.  The special $ variables are
all covered there.

It also contains a lot of other stuff you might be interested in.

The bash-docs is a debian package.  I don't know how other distros
handle the bash documentation.

Oh, by the way, if you have the groff package installed, you can force
the man command to display the manpages in your favorite browser. 
Simply type:

man -H bash

for example.  Looking at a large man page like bash in a browser is much
nicer, since you can very easily skip around in the document, and find
specific information by using the search capability of your browser.  To
make a long story short, it rocks!
