suppressing X when booting debian sarge

Hi.

Since you don't plan to use it, just

apt-get remove xdm

If (for some reason), you want to keep it installed, use

update-rc.d to disable it in run level 2.
You can use update-rc.d to disable any service you don't want 
to be started by default.
