I don't know if it will work with older versions of epic, but with epic
version 4 i use the following lines to tame the status bar.

set status_no_repeat on
set status_query Querying %Q
set status_away (is away)
set status_channel on %C
set status_format %@%N %A %C %K %+ %D %Q %F

In epic "/help 4 set status_format" is helpful to set it up just the way
you want.
