The only other thing that occurs to me is that you may perhaps have a 
config file that carries some defaults you do not want to be using. That 
was the case for me with Debian. Look for a cdrecord.conf in your /etc 
tree somewhere and check out the settings. I had to change a "device = " 
setting in it, and when I gave it "device=/dev/hdd" I no longer had to 
put that on the command line.
