This is the version of my mplayer:

MPlayer dev-CVS--3.3.5 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team

And it recognizes my alsa with no trouble.  Be your you have a line like:

ao=alsa         # To specify default audio driver (see -ao help for
                     # list)

in your /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf.

This works with the alsa in 2.6.11.
