I'm not sure why it is crashing instead of playing, but it takes a minut or more
because it is waiting for a whole MB of data to buffer before it plays.

Edit /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf and find the line that says:

cache = 1024              # Disk cache 1 MB

and change it so that it says:

cache = 64              # Disk cache 64 KB

This will solve the problem of the extremely large buffer.
