Well, I'm not sure how much actual bandwidth is taken up by ssh. In my
own attempts to avoid unnecessary encryption on my local net I've only
run into more trouble than value. But, since you bring it up, the
unencrypted equivalent is rsh. Per one of the examples from the
BookShare shelf, they advise piping via either rsh or ssh.
As far as I can determine, rmt was only ever for tape drives.
