The answer to your question about creating a schitzophrenic laptop is
yes.

As for what distro, that's as subjective as there are linuxers in the
world.  Everyone you ask will tell you that they like a different
distro and why!  Sometimes folks can become quite belligerant about it
all.  Me, I use Debian.  It works for me.
