You have two problems: one is to find the right editor, the other
is your speakup version. I have found that an editor called
"nano" works best for me. Nano is an improved pico with regular
expression support and a number of other nice stuff. By
definition, "nano" is like "pico" only more so. That's a pun.

Nano does not come with Slackware, but ought to. It is a snap to
install it. I could send you a copy if that would save you a
hunt. I have made nano my "alternate editor" in Pine. I am not
certain when the cursor tracking breakthrough came with speakup
versions, certainly not before 1.5. You may want to upgrade your
speakup version and/or kernel, which is REALLY getting your feet
wet! <smile>
