I guess I thought that everyone used emacsspeak. The blinux FAQ sort of
implies that.

I wasn't asking about favorite editors the same way newbies ask about whhich
distro was best. I was asking, as I kind of know several UNIX editors and I
don't want to waste time mastering one that causes problems with speakup.

So are people saying then, that there's nothing I can adjust on my console;
that my only choice is to upgrade speakup. I was hoping to avoid this until
I learned a little more.
