Thanks, this did the trick. Strangely enough, the command "kopt" isn't
documented anywhere so i had to experiment a little. This was what i
learned:
To change the name of the synth, add the following to what's already
in the /boot/grub/menu.lst: "kopt_kernel_number"
The "kopt" word is there, but you must follow it with the kernel
number, so when it's ready, it should look something like:
"kopt_2_4_21=" then there's some text and at the end of the line you
can type the following: "speakup_synth=SynthName" where "synthname" is
the name of your synthesizer.
In all the examples above, you should not have the quotes. Note that
if you have a dual-boot system with say weirdows and Linux, do *not*
run update-grub, for it will for some strange reason remove the
windows booting lines, at least it did so for me. Maybe i did
something wrong.
Note: this thing i've described here seems to work for me, i can't
guarantee it will work for anyone else so please don't hang me.:)
