In the file /boot/grub/menu.lst you will find a line that starts with
kopts or maybe it was koptions. This line will be commented out and
should stay that way, but if you add speakup_synth=xxx to the end of the
line and run update-grub then that commented out line will be coppied to
the places it is needed in menu.lst.

Yeah its pretty easy, but since most distros are switching to grub
learning it is probably a good investment for the future..
