off-topic: Telling chips apart?

Hi all. Has anyone figured out a good way to tell chips apart on a 
circuit board? Because I've tried many times, however they are all 
shaped the same so I can't tell the difference between say, a CPU and an 
EEPROM. Just wondering if anyone has encountered a similar or same 
problem. And if so what was/were the sollutions? Thanks!
