Steve,

If you turn off the mike with aumix or rexima instead of amixer,
the open mike problem goes away. It seems to be okay to intermix
those apps with amixer. Also, there is a device called "Mix" that
allows you to capture audio, but only in mono as far as I can
tell. More damn undocumented features in that alsa package than
you can shake a stick at, if you were into shaking sticks.
