Mail Command

I have been using the mail command under Debian to send mail to myself or the occasional files to private lists.  I found today that the mail command no longer works.  I tried changing to the sendmail command but cannot figure out how to put a subject in the note.  the -s command no longer works.  I tried doing a man 8 command on sendmail and do not get the answer.  Can any of you shed some light on this?
