Enabling ssh access in red hat 9

I haven't read this entire thread yet, but this sounds more complicated
than you need.

Red Hat /Fedora provides an excellent scripted interface for managing
these (and other) services--at least their most common componants.

As root, from any console prompt, type:

setup

The second link down is firewalling. Arrow down and press enter.

Tab through, select a qualitative level, such as medium security, and
select "customize" to go through and mark certain ports (such as
incoming ssh) open.

Two other important scripted utilities are chkconfig and service. Use
the latter to stop, start, or restart any service on the fly. Use the
former to set default conditions for any service in each of the six
runlevels.

To see what services you can manage via chkconfig (and service) do:

chkconfig --list |more
