using two sound cards

Hi Chuck:
I am not sure why you are getting the /dev/dsp1 errors when using sox.  
On my box, the play and rec commands work well with both sound cards 
using the "-d" option to tell sox what card to use.  However, I agree 
with Janina, you should try to use the alsa interface to your soundcard 
whenever possible.  I use mplayer to play audio and ecasound to record 
it.  They both have good CLI interfaces and good support for the alsa 
sound system.  Oh, ecasound can also play sound at the same time that it 
records, and it can play multiple sound files via different sound cards 
at the same time too.  You should really take a look at it.  It is 
a little tricky to use though.
