first of all the command is this.
smbclient -M note the upper case m followed by a space and the netbios 
name of the windows machine or the ip address no preceeding forward or 
back slashes are necissary.
after that you should have a message that says connected. type your 
message and predd strl+d to send
after which you type the message and press enter and then hit ctrl+d
