errors starting gnome on slack 10

Just installed slackware 10 and figured I'd play with gnome. I installed 
the gnome and x packages, and selected gdm as the window manager when 
installing. however whenever I start gnome I get a fatal error saying 
that there are no screens. how can I fix this?
