As for a way around this...There are plenty. One of which I can think of 
is to modify your script so it authenticates against something like 
/etc/passwd. I've seen scripts that do this in C...In fact I think I 
have one lying around here somewhere. I'm sure there's a Perl module or 
2 that can do this, not sure of any names however.
