Help with date and redhat 9

did you set the VISUAL and EDITOR variables to your favorite editor? 
If you wanted to use nano for example you'd do
export VISUAL=/usr/bin/nano
export EDITOR=/usr/bin/nano
note that EDITOR and VISUAL are in all caps.
