building dump/restore

I tried to send this to you, Adam, but it bounced saying something about mail refused so I guess I needs reply to the list instead.

Silly question here, where can one find this utility? I don't recall
seeing dump/restore in the most recent slackware distro.  Is it a
stand-alone package one installs from a tarball?  I've generally been
wondering what would be the best way to backup a linux system.  I've
known about tar but I wondered about other tools like ftape (I think
it was) and such.
