speakup and modifications for festible

okay on the blinux website i am having two problems.
first the instructions say that you apply the patches with in the speakup
dir, the patches are successful.
then it indicates that you can run the install from the usr/src/speakup-1.5
that works fine
now, my question is.
after patching the kernel, if i then go and get the latest from cvs, will
that defeat the patch i just applied to speakup?
aditionally.
after doing make dep
i need to do make bzImage according to the site.
when i do this gcc gives me the following error.
"internal compiler error program cc1 got fatal signal 11make [init/main.o]
error 1
cpp0: output pipe has been closed.
any help?
